iPhone

Let me list this:

  • iPod
  • GSM mobile phone
  • 3.5mm headphone jack
  • microphone
  • ambient light sensor
  • proximity sensor
  • orientation sensor
  • 160dpi 3.5″ touchscreen
  • running OS X
  • Speakers
  • 2MP camera
  • WiFI
  • Bluetooth

Er… yowser. There’s ‘convergence device,’ and then there’s… this thing is going to cost a fortune, surely?

Mind you, so did the iPod, originally.

Incidentally – if this does indeed run desktop applications (as Jobs is suggesting), and you can hook up a Bluetooth keyboard, we have the ultraportable Mac laptop here, too.

Oh, and this is why Apple went to Intel. It’s presumably running a low-voltage Core Solo or similar.

  1. This is the first Apple device I’ve looked at and thought, “I need to sell my granny…”. Wow :O
Disappointed it’s not 3G, not sure why as I feel I’ve been sucked into the whole 3G thing without really understanding if it’s needed. Will it be fast data without it?
More importantly, with the experience of my N80, the data charges for these devices needs to get cheaper.

  2. Heh. Nicely phrased, Bernie. I have my doubts, but I was also a confirmed Newton addict a decade ago, and those things were absolutely usable without tactile feedback. In fact, I’d rate Newton as the best OS interface I’ve used, bar none.
I think a lot of it is about how responsive the UI is; from early hands-on reports, it sounds like the iPhone’s predictive correction is about good enough to make the keyboard work ‘well enough.’ We’ll see — this really is make or break stuff.

  3. I really appreciate Apple’s inroads to this market because its iPhone entry helps cap the price of Nokia’s top-flight phones. I’m headed to the Nokia N95 sales counter next month since I need real wifi and gps for annotations of my photos. I’m also looking forward to snapping the iPhone in the hands of someone while using my N95 to take the picture.
